Every score in the World Residence Index is produced by documented formulas applied to named public sources — designed to be transparent, reproducible by any qualified analyst, and rebuilt from raw data every year. This page summarises the system; the full Methodology Manual documents every scale, cap and change.

The Scoring System

From raw data to a single number.

  1. STEP 1

    Score each parameter

    Every territory is scored 1 (worst) to 100 (best) on each of the nine parameters, on capped linear or logarithmic scales chosen to match how the underlying data behaves. Names describe the dimension measured, not the direction — a high Warmongering score means low militarisation.

  2. STEP 2

    Sum, equally weighted

    The nine scores are summed with equal weight — no parameter dominates, and no proprietary weighting can quietly tilt the ranking.

  3. STEP 3

    Normalise to the WRI Score

    The raw total is normalised to the published WRI Score on a 0–100 scale where higher is better. In 2026 it runs from 89.18 (Sark) to 24.55 (North Korea).

    Personal Income Tax

    100 = no income tax

    Top marginal rate, adjusted for regimes built for new residents: zero-tax, territorial and lump-sum systems.

    Population Density

    100 = uncrowded

    Residents per square kilometre on a logarithmic scale — space priced as the luxury it is.

    GDP per Capita

    100 = highest output per resident

    Nominal output per resident — a proxy for infrastructure, services and economic depth.

    Life Expectancy

    100 = longest life expectancy

    Average life expectancy at birth — the broadest single measure of healthcare and living conditions.

    100 = strongest lifestyle appeal

    International arrivals per capita — revealed preference for a country's amenities, access and appeal.

    Unemployment

    100 = lowest unemployment

    The official ILO-definition rate — a clean read on labour-market and social stability.

    Warmongering

    100 = least militarised

    Military expenditure as a share of GDP. Geopolitical neutrality is a residence asset.

Tax Classifications

How special regimes are scored.

How each personal income tax system is scored in the World Residence Index. Each row gives the tax system, the score it receives out of 100, and the definition of that system.

Governance

Annual procedure and change log.

Each edition follows the same procedure: refresh all quantitative data from the designated sources; verify tax-regime classifications; update the Woke rubric where legislation changed; apply the formulas exactly as documented; recalculate, verify to zero errors, and publish with edition number and date. Formulas and caps change only through a published methodology revision.
